Creative Writing Strategies
It has been said that truth is stranger than fiction. As you look at some of the titles of the headlines in our everyday notification about what is going on in the world around us in the news it can be mind stretching. These headlines by themselves can give you a place to start to write or you can take all or part of the events and weave them into your stories or characters actions and see what you can create as a story line.
Sometimes, start with just the title and try to build a story out of just that much. Then try to take the title and some of the events and mix them into your story. Then try to take all of the content and see if you can build on it or add to or expand your story lines. It might surprise you how much of the content in the news around us shows up in the content of what we are writing about currently so see if you can spice up your material by adding some extra events or details.
These approaches can help you build your writing muscles. I find that I often wonder how in the world did that person get in that situation or have that event happen to them or get through what happened to them. I can create a totally different story by changing what happened to different ways that might have happened. Another way is to think about what might have happened if the people in the events had done different things and how the series of things might have ended in a different way.
There are many ways to spark your inner author and write more effectively and easily. These are just a few places to start to help you stretch and become a better writer. Have fun with this. If it is hard then you are using your left brain and to write easily you want to be using your right brain.
